Department of Mindfulness, art and Child Support:
Learning Support Assistant (LSA) helps children who need support within the classroom. This role assists teachers to create environments where students with extra learning needs can make the most of their education. A learning support assistant is the ideal role if you are passionate about supporting students with a variety of needs on a one-on-one or small group basis, within a dynamic mixed grade level program. You will need to be committed to making a difference and have the enthusiasm to raise student social emotional, and academic achievement. Being a learning support assistant requires you to be an empathetic and compassionate person who is passionate about providing a nurturing learning environment.
You could be working one-on-one or in a small group, supporting children with their education, behavioral and social development, helping children who find it difficult to learn because they have dyslexia, a disability, a health issue, or those who don’t speak English as a first language.
At ChefLab we focus primarily on sensed based learning and as such, the child support teacher will also have the opportunity to lead our full group mindfulness classes twice a week which include Yoga/movement and Art and Crafts. As a member of our support staff you will be given guidance from senior staff members – including interpersonal as well as documented prepared materials and training to prepare for and lead these lessons.
Responsibilities include:
- Motivating student to achieve their potential.
- Supporting and encouraging students in their work.
- Experience working as a support staff within a larger classroom setting
- Supporting and encouraging students in their work.
- Encouraging children to communicate.
- Helping children to understand instructions.
- Ensuring students feel comfortable and confident in their own abilities.
- Listening to children read, reading to them, and telling them stories.
- Looking after vulnerable children who require a dedicated person to manage their physical needs, including but not limited to their hygiene, individualized sensory and attention challenges.
- Helping children who need extra support to complete tasks.
- Supporting children during social activities and outings
- Helping children transition between activities
- Supervising group activities.
- Assisting teachers to plan learning activities, prepare learning materials, complete records, and carry out administrative tasks.
- Supporting teachers in managing class behavior.
- Following a child’s care plan.
- Supervising children as part of a larger group
- Helping children clear away materials and equipment after lessons.
Requirements:
- Background in special education, occupational therapy, psychology or related field
- Experience working as a support staff within a larger classroom setting
- Relevant experience of individual and/or group work with children – Student training and internships acceptable as experience
- Technologically savvy: proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and design platforms such as Canva, and Adobe – preferred
- Proven success working collaboratively and efficiently on a creative and goal-oriented team
- Excellent oral and written communication skills – preferred
- Dedication to a high level of confidentiality
- Ability to take responsibly and work on own initiative
- Good record-keeping skills – Preferred
- Ability to listen and respond to children and young people patiently, sensitively and effectively
- Have a flexible and evolving mindset with a toolkit of different strategies to engage students
- Confidence and willingness to teach across a number of different subjects
- Be a strong team player Dedicated classroom practitioner with a commitment to high-quality motivational teaching and learning
- Able to build strong relationships with the students and the community that supports them (for example parents, staff, and outside agencies)
- Patient, proactive and able to creatively problem solve. As the Inclusive Curriculum provision is ever-evolving based on student needs; the responsibilities of the role therefore will change and adapt.
